LAKE PLACID — After two years as assistant principal of Lake Placid High School, Michael Haley is set to become principal of the home of the Green Dragons.
Superintendent Wally Cox announced Wednesday his recommendation of Haley to replace longtime Lake Placid High Principal Ruth Heckman.
If Cox's recommendation is approved by the School Board of Highlands County, Haley would become principal effective July 1.
Heckman will have the title of "principal on special assignment" effective July 1 as she heads the school district's efforts to start an International Baccalaureate diploma program.
Haley said he felt "ecstatic" about his selection for the position.
"I think it's like home," Haley said of Lake Placid High. "I'm looking forward to getting started."
Prior to coming to Lake Placid High, for nine years Haley was an instructor for the Air Force Junior ROTC program at Coral Springs High School in Coral Springs.
Haley has a bachelor's degree in technical management from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University.
He earned a master's degree in educational leadership at Nova Southeastern University in south Florida.
Haley's motto as an educator: "education is not a spectator sport, you must get into the game."
