SEBRING - When the Sebring baseball team reached the state's final four in 2007, it had been more than 40 years since its last appearance. After a 2-0 victory over Bartow on Friday night, the Blue Streaks are one step away from accomplishing the same feat for the second year in a row.
Steven Fortner threw seven shutout innings and got help from a errorless Blue Streak defense to help Sebring reach the Class 4A regional finals for the second straight season.
The Blue Streaks (22-8) scored a run in each of the first two innings and held on the rest of the way to earn the right to play a three-game series with Riverdale of Fort Myers next week.
The first two games of the series will be played beginning at 4 p.m. on Friday, May 9 in Fort Myers, while the third game (if necessary) will be played at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 10, also in Fort Myers.
Sebring took a 1-0 lead in the first when Kyle Long smacked an RBI single to right field, scoring Cody Higgins, who doubled to lead off the bottom of the frame.
They added another run in the second when Michael Jones knocked one of his two hits into left-center and Cory Watt scored on an errant throw to third base.
