Bucking The Trend

Published: June 14, 2008

Wal-Mart isn't the only 'Rollin' Back The Prices' place. I found that the Blue Crab restaurant is doing it too. Can you believe 99-cent coffee? In this day and age. And $1.99 for a draft beer. If you look you'll see a rollback on entrees too. It's almost un-American.

But not according to Jim Pearson, brother to owner Bill Pearson, it's like offering their customers a "gas break" he told me.

"It's a little too soon to tell if it's going to affect the bottom line," Jim said of the price adjustment.

What they are hoping for is that an increase in customer volume will offset any loss from the individual meals. Because, Jim says, "When you give to the community quite often it comes back to you."
"The customers love it," waitress Terri Trainer said of the new prices. So do I.

Terri, one of those rare born and raised in Florida people, has been with the restaurant for over a year. Last week, by the way, she saw her son Timothy graduate from Avon Park High School.

The Pearson brothers on the other hand were born and raised in Michigan. There are from a brood of six brothers with one sister sandwiched in the center.

Not To Be Overlooked
Both the Kenilworth Lodge and The Wild Turkey restaurant have a reputation built on their humorous and at times outrageous but always entertaining signage. Well the Bible Fellowship Church out on Hammock Road in Sebring shouldn't be overlooked. Recently their sign read "Wal-Mart Isn't The Only Saving Place." Good one.

Has It Been That Long
Ramblings reader Judith Hinkle sent me an email the other day in regards to the column I wrote about the push-tabs on the side of boxes containing rolls of stuff like aluminum foil, plastic wrap and wax paper.

She had received a similar email from a friend and like me ran out to the kitchen to see if it was true. It was.

But she took it one step further. She contacted Reynolds "to find out how long those helpful little jiggers have been there." Since 1996 they told her.

My goodness the Clintons were still in the White House back then.

Who's Running
After Hillary conceded the presumptive nomination to Obama there were items posted on the Internet by rather reputable news agencies speculating about Hillary being Obama's running mate. The problem was that they referred to the pairing as the Clinton-Obama ticket. What an insult, or is it simply wishful thinking?

It reminded me of a lady who voted in the primaries. During her televised exit interview she said she voted for Hillary, "because she would have Bill close at hand to help her." That's scary. Who are these people voting for?

Maybe what they're looking for is an Obillary ticket. Personally I think Obama should distance himself from those two.

We Need Change
Candidates continue to promise us change. That reminds me of the sergeant telling his barracks of recruits, "I want you guys to change your underwear every day! Smith you change with Williams; Krakowski you change with Rossi."

Another Negated Notation
There is a new movie being released titled "Be Kind - Rewind." It won't be long until the children of today will have no idea what rewinding means. It's an act that is fading to obscurity. The VHS is history and audio tapes are rapidly fading from the scene, as in: "What's that funny looking opening in the car radio for mama?" "Go ask your grandfather."
