SEBRING — A Sebring man remained in Highlands County Jail in lieu of $15,250 bond, after sheriff's investigators say he burglarized his aunt's Leisure Lakes home three times by crawling through her doggie door.
Michael Wayne Britt, 31, of 2105 U.S. 27 S., Lot 339, was charged with three counts of burglary of an unoccupied dwelling and one count of petty theft first offense.
According to sheriff's deputy Michael Weed's report, between May 8 and May 26, Britt pushed his 6-foot 150 pound frame through a doggie door in the rear of a home belonging to his aunt in the 900 block of Wildflower Street in Leisure Lakes.
Once inside the home, he entered the victim's bedroom and took loose change she stored in a five-gallon water bottle that he knew she kept in her closet.
The victim reported her nephew knew of the change because she had let him live with her when he was homeless.
Britt reportedly knew the victim had left town for two weeks, and neighbors say they saw him at the victim's home.
Britt was contacted on May 26 after the victim reported the crime. On May 27, Weed reported that he was contacted by Britt, who wished to confess, the report stated.
Britt reportedly went to three separate locations, Publix, Sweetbay and Riverside National Bank, in Lake Placid, using Coinstar machines to exchange the change for paper money, the report stated.
Britt reported that he received $169, $89 and $125, the report stated.
Because investigators could only find evidence at the Riverside National Bank in the amount of $88.14, Britt was only charged with petty theft, the report stated.
Britt was booked into the jail on June 10.
