COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. — The sizzling temperatures in upstate New York didn't do much to heat up the Sebring 12-and-under team's bats in their opening games, but the Streaks have since caught fire in three straight victories at the Cooperstown Dreams Park National Invitational Tournament at Cooperstown Dreams Park.
After failing to score in their opening two contests, the Streaks exploded for a 17-4 mercy-rule victory on Tuesday over the Newnan Predators of Georgia for their third straight win.
Dane Maddox threw all four innings, fanned six and had plenty of support after Sebring batted around twice in the first inning to set up the four-inning rout.
Garrett DeRoss had four RBI, including two singles and an three-run home run to pace Sebring. Alfred Brown had two singles and an RBI, Cullen Lovett had three singles and an RBI, Jordan Baker had three RBI and Jared Lang added three more. Ty Little and Tyler Carr each added RBI.
On Sunday, The Streaks dropped a 9-0 game to the Lone Star Rebels out of Texas in their opener and a 3-0 defeat to the Cincinnati RiverBats out of Ohio, but settled down for two victories on Monday to climb up the rankings of the 98-team field.
Sebring's Jared Lang struck out three in a complete-game, 3-2 victory over Team Slugger (also out of Florida), helped out by DeRoss' two runs and Alfred Brown's run.
DeRoss then took the mound for the Monday nightcap and struck out three in 5 1/3 innings to lead the Streaks to a 7-1 victory over the North Glendale Wolfpack out of Arizona.
DeRoss paced Sebring offensively with three RBI and a two-run home run. Brown added a run, Lovett scored twice and had an RBI and Alex Forde and Little each scored runs.
Carr closed the door on the Wolfpack by getting the last two outs with the bases loaded to seal the victory and send the Sebring team to a No. 41 ranking in the field.
Sebring took on the St. Louis Mustangs of Missouri on Tuesday night and face the Lake Bluff Bobcats of Illinois this morning before tournament play begins.
