SEBRING –– The inaugural Jacob Casey Scholarship and Educational Fund golf tournament was held Saturday at Harder Hall Country Club.
Casey, who spent his childhood in Avon Park, moved to Ocala and played football on the Trinity Catholic squad that won the Class 2A state championship.
Jacob was tragically killed in a car accident and his father, Brian, came up with the idea for the memorial.
"This is a non-profit tournament," said Casey. "All the funds raised will go to underprivileged youth in Highlands County."
Current Gator backup quarterback John Brantley, who played with Jacob at Trinity Catholic, along with several other Gator athletes, participated in the event.
The tournament was an 18-hole event with a four-person scramble format, and the overall Gross winner's with a score of 58 was Chris Lyall, Jack Trombley, Matt Moye and Kip Goolsby.
Winning the First Flight Net with a 51 was Dennis Crews, Greg Kramer, Jody Prescott and Jeff Harstine, while Robert Freeland, Mark Howard, Mike Lamp and Harry Gregor placed second with a score of 54.
Winning the Second Flight net with a 51 was the Gator athletes of David Nelson, John Brantley, Chaz Henry and Javy Estopian.
Placing second, after a match of cards, was the foursome of Jeff Spires, Lyle Wilson, Dan Sassin and Kerry Standridge with a score of 51.
Closest-to-the-pin honors went to Pete Coughlin on hole No. 6 and Don Spires on hole No. 9.
