Hurricanes Close Out Season In Style

ST. PETERSBURG - Megan Wolfe and Sean Spiegel finished the summer swim season exactly where they began - in first place.

The pair collected five gold medal finishes for the Highlands Hurricanes at the 2008 Area 3-5 Championships at the North Shore Pool in St. Petersburg last weekend.

Wolfe placed first in the 25-yard freestyle (11.40) and the 50-yard freestyle (24.06), while placing second in the 100-yard freestyle (54.06) and the 100-yard butterfly (59.41) and third place finishes in the 15-18 year old 400 individual medley (5:02.23), 200-yard freestyle (2:00.84) and the 100-yard backstroke (1:02.94) in the final meet of the season.

Spiegel snagged first place finishes in the 25-yard freestyle (09.94), 50-yard freestyle (20.79) and the 100-yard freestyle (46.20) to cap off a great summer for the 25-year old Hurricane sprinter.

The championships attracted 25 teams from around the state with a total of 731 swimmers and points were not kept or accrued at the event.

The Hurricanes and Lake Placid Aquatics had a total of 31 swimmers to compete in individual and relay competitions, which is far lower than St. Petersburg Aquatics and Sarasota Sharks who brought 99 and 97 swimmers, respectively.

Ten-year old Nick Videll finished ninth in the 9-10 year old 50-yard breaststroke with a time of 46.62, Tammi Beach placed 10th in the 15-18-year old 200-yard backstroke in 2:38.68, while Zach LaVoy placed fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:11.55 and sixth in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:43.03 at the championships.

Julie and Bryan Kirsch of Sebring placed in the top 10 in three events, with Bryan finishing third in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:06.50) and second in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:28.30) with Julie placing eighth in the 25-yard freestyle (12.66) and 10-year old Tevin Bullard placed sixth in the 25-yard butterfly (19.93) in the 9-10-year old category.

Nine-year old Mason Million of the Lake Placid Aquatics squad finished sixth in the 50-yard butterfly with a time of 44.62 and 10th in the 200-freestyle with a time of 2:59.54 in the 10-under category.

Tanner Oxer and Katie Dye also placed in the top ten in the 10-under category at the event. Oxer placed seventh in the 25-yard breaststroke with a time of 23.85 and Dye came in seventh with a time of 18.11 for LP.

Eighteen-year old LP Aquatic swimmer Marbelly Creel finished the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 1:13.63 to finish in 13th position, while 20-year old Quinlan Wolfe of the Hurricanes had a pair of fifth place finishes in the 25-yard freestyle (10.46) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:15.36) and finished with at time of 51.21 in the 100-yard freestyle for a seventh place finish.

In relay competitions, the boy's 200-yard freestyle relay, with Wolfe, Wilkes, David Moore and Spiegel, took first place with a time of 1:30.69 and the boy's 200-yard medley took third place with a time of 1:46.12.

The 200-yard medley relay team consisted of Wolfe, Kirsch, Spiegel and Wilkes.

The girls 200-yard medley relay team with Katie Bullard, Samantha Spiegel, Raeleigh Miller and Mikaela Talley finished 10th with a time of 2:42.46 and the girls 200-yard medley relay team captured a fifth place finish with at time of 1:51.73 with Michelle Bash, Kirsch, Beach and Wolfe comprising the squad.
