Dozens Line Up For Angel Food

Published: July 30, 2008

On Monday morning, Nancy Vincent went into Home Depot on an errand. She was wearing a patch on her clothing promoting Angel Food Ministries.

"Someone said, oh, look, she's from Angel Food. I saw that in the paper this morning," Vincent said Tuesday afternoon.

The story, published in Monday's edition of Highlands Today, detailed how people can buy a box of groceries for $30. Grace Bible Church has been serving about 500 families a month.

Vincent had to return to her car for applications. "I gave out about 20," said Vincent.

On Monday, while the church office was closed, dozens of people, perhaps hundreds, called and left requests for applications, Vincent said.

"The secretary said she's done nothing but answer calls," Vincent said. "I came in to help. The pastor said we're going to need another phone line, just for Angel Food."

She expects the number of boxes sold could double next month.

"We'll need more volunteers," she said. "People are hurting. Personally, I feel so blessed and honored. A couple came on Saturday. They were both very ill, they had no jobs, and they were just overwhelmed. I'm so glad I could be a part of this. I had no idea so many people would be helped by this."

People were coming to the sanctuary for applications on Tuesday morning, Vincent said. "They need to come to the office, Tuesday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m."

More importantly, the deadline for an August order is 4 p.m. Thursday if they come to the church office, or noon Sunday, Aug. 3 if they come to the church, Vincent said.

People who pay for food can pick up their order from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, Vincent said. Food which isn't picked up will be donated.

"We're sending out applications now," Vincent said. "But some people called and left a message, but they didn't leave a phone number. So if we just mail them an application, they may not be able to get it back to us in time. They need to show up at the church office by Thursday, or come to the church from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Sunday."

People should pay their $30 in cash, by check, or by money order, Vincent said. For September orders, the church will be able to accept food stamps.
