SFCC To Unveil Renovated Building

AVON PARK - A walk down the main hallway in South Florida Community College's Building T leads to Lorrie Key's pride and joy in the renovated structure.

It's a classroom that seats 36 in cushy black executive chairs with tables/desktops of simulated wood-grain. The adjoining modern kitchen is ready for final food preparation.

The largest classroom in the college's Corporate and Continuing Education Department is designed to be comfortable for those attending multiple-day conferences and training sessions.

Key, the SFCC Corporate and Continuing Education program coordinator, said the program has expanded so much it needed more room.

With the recent move from Building L to Building T, the number of classrooms dedicated to the program increased from one to three.

Building T formerly housed the college's nursing program, which relocated to the Health/Science Building when it opened last year.

The state-of-the-art classroom equipment includes the podium with a laptop computer, projector and microphone.

The Continuing Education Department works with local businesses to provide continuing education for such professions as nursing, doctors, firefighters and law enforcement.

Customized training is also developed for companies with specific needs.

Before the Wal-Mart distribution center opened in DeSoto County, the company looked to the college for work-place Spanish language lessons for the center's managers.

Most of the center's applicants were Spanish speaking or bilingual, Key said. Since the managers were already in place before the facility was completed, it was decided the managers needed work-place Spanish for safety issues.

Contract training is another option for companies that provide the training, but need facilities and classroom space either in Building T or at another location on campus.

The department's training and license renewal programs include: construction contractor re-certification, preventing medical errors, commercial driver's license Class A refresher, bus mechanic workshop, child care provider training, and Windows 98 training and office support specialist certificates.

The college will host a Tri-Chamber Mixer/open house from 5-7 p.m., Aug. 28 to showcase the newly renovated building, which is on the east side of the Avon Park campus adjacent to the SFCC Dental Education Building.

For more information, call Key at 784-7033.
