Driver Charged With DUI Manslaughter

Earl Ladon Wiley has been charged with DUI manslaughter in the traffic death of his girlfriend on April 18, 2008 on Flare Road at Brunns Road in Sebring.

SEBRING - The driver in a fatal crash April 18 on Flare Road has been arrested and charged in the death of his girlfriend when the car he was driving west on Flare Road hit a tree at the intersection of Brunns Road.
Earl Ladon Wiley, 46, of 322 Tern Ave., Sebring, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs (DUI) manslaughter and DUI with property damage.
Killed in the crash was Rebecca J. Soltis, 45, of 322 Tern Ave.
According to a report by the Florida Highway Patrol, Wiley was traveling west at 9:51 p.m. Friday, April 18 on Flare Road, at an unknown rate of speed, in a 1999 Chevrolet coupe, when he could not make the right-angle turn at Brunns Road, the report stated. His car left the roadway and hit a large tree on the passenger side.
The vehicle then rotated 90 degrees and stopped facing north on the west shoulder of Brunns Road, the report stated.
Soltis was pronounced dead at Highlands Regional Medical Center. Wiley was airlifted to Tampa General Hospital.
Both were wearing their seat belts.
Wiley was initially charged with careless driving. The intersection is marked with three yellow warning reflector signs along with a yellow left turn directional arrow. There is also a caution left turn arrow with a suggested speed of 15 mph, the report stated.
The case was direct filed by the State Attorney's Office, according to Sheriff's Central Records.
A warrant for Wiley's arrest was issued on July 22, authorized by Judge Peter F. Estrada.
Wiley remained in Highlands County Jail in lieu of $150,500 bond Thursday.
