City's $6 Million Revenue Drop Mostly From Grants

Published: July 22, 2008

The city of Avon Park's budget reflects a total drop of more than $6 million in its total revenues for the next fiscal year.

Most of the reduction is because the city will not receive several grants, which would normally go for improvement projects, city Finance Director Renee Green told Highlands Today on Monday.

For instance, the Avon Park Executive Airport received a $322,148 grant from Southwest Florida Water Management District that was used for part of a drainage project at the airport, which was already completed. It also took in more than $2 million in federal grants, which were used to rehabilitate runway 9/27 and for some of the airport's master planning.

The total amount of grants given to the city this fiscal year that will not be given next year were not immediately available.

Even though the city has planned some budget cuts for the fiscal year, Green said the amount was not yet available as a final draft of the budget hasn't come out yet.

A story published Sunday titled "Avon Park Anticipates $6M Budget Cut For 2009" gives the misconception that the reductions come from the city's tax revenues and enterprise funds. Highlands Today apologizes for this error and any confusion this story may have caused.
