SEBRING - A Sebring woman was free on $1,000 bail Friday, after she was accused by Office Depot of making copies of customer receipts and paying herself phony cash refunds and Visa gift cards.
April Victoria Harberts, 18, of 333 Walnut St., Sebring, was charged with scheming to defraud - swindle to obtain property less than $20,000.

A loss prevention manager for Office Depot contacted the sheriff's office at about 11:57 a.m. June 25 to report the theft, according to a sheriff's arrest report.

The manager told deputy Charles Proctor that Harberts copied customers' sales receipts from legitimate cash or credit sales, then used the copies to make fraudulent cash refunds to herself, no more than $50 per transaction, the report stated.

Transactions smaller than $50 do not require a manager's approval, the report stated.

The manager alleged that Harberts used some of the money from 43 transactions between April 25 and June 17 to buy about $600 in Visa gift cards and got $1,259.07 in cash.

Proctor reported he met with Harberts at the sheriff's office where she admitted to completing 41 of the transactions. She reportedly told Proctor that she used the money and Visa cards to buy "necessities and pay bills," the report stated.
