SEBRING - The modifications to the Memorial Elementary School roof have successfully solved the expansion problem, engineers told the School Board of Highlands County on Wednesday.
The special school board meeting brought together representatives from the design, engineering and construction management firms working on the school, which is in the final stages of construction.
An investigation of the school's roof was prompted after cement blocks cracked in February due to thermal expansion.
Principle Design and Development Inc., which has an office in Sebring, inspected the school's roof system and reviewed engineering and construction documents.
The firm's report noted a few concerns.
B.B.M. Structural Engineers responded to those concerns individually in July 15 letter to the architectural firm that designed the school - Swilley Curtis Mundy Hunnicutt Associates Architects Inc.
School Board Attorney John McClure said in a sealed response to the school board, the engineer of record, Bora Erbilen of B.B.M. Structural Engineers Inc. has certified that adequate corrective measures have been taken and the work has been done in a satisfactory manner.
"I think it is important that the engineer of record correctly address the particular issues that were raised here - the sheer wall issue, the drag strut issue, the overall structural integrity issue, the ability of the building to withstand lateral wind loads ... ," McClure said.
Architect Ben Mundy said "obviously there are some issues that came up with this project, I have every reason to believe that the remedial details that they BBM Structural Engineers came up with are very adequate."
A.D. Morgan Corp. President Rebecca Smith said "we have completed all the remediation that is necessary to move forward with the engineer of record certifying that the building is safe to occupy."
A.D. Morgan is the construction management firm directing the school's construction.
Due to an oversight, Principle Design and Development Inc. did not have a representative at the school board meeting.
Smith said Principal Design missed some of the details of the remediation work, which could not be visually inspected, but were outlined in the paperwork.
The school board decided to allow some time for representatives of Principal Design, B.B.M. and A.D. Morgan to discuss the issues.
A special school board meeting, to further discuss and review the school's roof, has been scheduled for 4 p.m., Aug. 5.
