AVON PARK - Typically, golf courses play host for particular groups who want to raise funds for their causes.
But in the case of the third annual American Cancer Society charity tournament, River Greens golf club not only hosted, but spearheaded the event, which drew 36 players on Sunday.
"It's a little unusual," said Jason Beatty, head professional at River Greens. "It's a fundraiser the course itself puts on, and it's more of a community tournament that a lot of members play in."
The two-person best-ball tournament has raised more than $2,000 over the past three years, according to Beatty, a total he said the ACS is certainly worthy of.
"It's something that a lot of people can relate to," Beatty said. "There are so many different types of cancer and it affects so many - it's a great tournament to hold a charity event for."
Greg Gentry and Clay Davis took first place in the Championship flight, gross division, combining for a score of 67. Vince Boever and Jim Cercy, meanwhile, won the Championship net division with a 57.
The First flight, gross division was won by Dennis and Bev Dunn, while the first flight, net division was taken by Dave Beulow and Chuck Toth.
Lefty St. Pierre and Michelle Koon won the highest score honor, while closest to the pin went to Paul McCormac, who put his ball within a half-inch on No. 17. McCormac also won the closest to the line competition, while Karen Speaker won the longest putt crown on No. 7.
"It was a very nice turnout for a small event," Beatty said, noting all players were given a free round of golf at River Greens in addition to other prizes.
He also noted the course will play host to a benefit for St. June's Children's Hospital, which will be held next month.
