SEBRING - Highlands County Habitat for Humanity is calling for women volunteers to participate in an ongoing, local "Women Build" project on Thursdays and Saturdays from 8 a.m.-2 p.m.
Women volunteers of all walks of life and skill levels are invited to join other women to be a part of the program, which teaches women to address the crisis of children in poverty by building homes with families in need.
A 'Women Build" site provides an environment where women can feel comfortable learning and practicing construction skills. Often times women are intimidated at a mixed site or given the more menial tasks assigned to them by men. A worksite where women feel comfortable offers the best chances for women to learn about all aspects of building.
Nationally, more than 60 percent of Habitat for Humanity's houses are build with women heads of household. These women are often dependent upon the goodwill of neighbors, friends and relatives for even minor repairs. By receiving training as part of the "Women Build" program, they are better equipped to maintain their homes and, consequently, are more confident in their ability to cope with day-to-day situations.
