SEBRING - A review of the engineering report on the Memorial Elementary School roof prompted the School Board of Highlands County to call a special meeting to discuss concerns noted in the report.
School Board Chairman J. Ned Hancock said Wednesday there are issues that are not insurmountable, which can be corrected, that the reviewing engineer suggested should be taken care of.
The investigation and assessment of the elementary school's roof was prompted after cement blocks cracked in February due to expansion. The school on Memorial Drive is currently under construction and scheduled to open in August.
Principle Design and Development Inc., which has an office in Sebring, inspected the school's roof system and reviewed engineering and construction documents.
The firm released its report June 27.
The school board will be asking the architectural firm that designed the school (Swilley Curtis Mundy Hunnicutt Associates Architects Inc.) about what corrective measures will be taken in response to the engineering report, Hancock said.
Also, Hancock said, he wants to know "how long it will take for those corrective actions to actually be completed, hopefully so we can get it done before school Aug. 18."
School Board Member Donna Howerton said "we need to have the concerns addressed that were brought out in the report satisfied. I want to make sure that we've got a good building that's going to hold up, heaven forbid, if we have any high winds or a hurricane."
The School Board of Highlands County will hold a special meeting to discuss the Memorial Elementary roof at 4 p.m., Wednesday, in the Garland Boggus Board Room, 426 School St., Sebring.
