SEBRING — There is nothing like celebrating your country's birthday by getting some beneficial exercise.
The 14th annual Firecracker 5k run/walk attracted 208 participants, who managed to roll out of bed in time for the 7:30 a.m. start on Friday morning at beautiful Highlands Hammock State Park.
"It was an excellent day to be outside and we had a record number of people participate in this year's event," said race director Chet Brojek. "I can't thank my sponsors and the community enough for their support for a worthy cause."
The proceeds from the event go to the Avon Park High School cross country program, which Brojek coached for many years in his time as the Red Devils athletic director.
Eddie NeSmith was the overall male winner with a time of 17 minutes, 43 seconds, while Sebring High runner Connor Bauer placed second overall with an 18:00.
Kim Price was the overall female winner with a time of 22:25, while Laura Griffin won the female master division with a 23:00 and Dave Quarles finished first in the male master division with an 18:50.
The top three finishers in each age group received trophies and medals.
"We live in the greatest country in the world," said Brojek. "It was wonderful to celebrate our independence and to give thanks to the people who help keep us free."
