LAKE PLACID – A well-known handcyclist and his wife were arrested Thursday morning after Highlands County Sheriff's Special Investigations Unit detectives say they served a search warrant on his Lake Placid home and found a large quantity of marijuana.
Keane West, 39, and his wife Christine West, 60, of 159 Hillside Drive, Lake Placid, were charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of more than 20 grams of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Keane West was additionally charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. West had been convicted in 1992 for carrying a concealed weapon in Vero Beach, according to a source at the sheriff's office.
It was about 7:10 a.m. Thursday when deputies approached the Lake Placid home with the search warrant. Once inside they discovered more than 500 grams of marijuana (or close to a pound of pot), a scale, and a loaded .32 caliber pistol.
The marijuana was valued at about $1,800, according to sheriff's Capt. Randy LaBelle.
Keane West reportedly holds a Guinness world record for handcycling the longest distance.
Keane West was transported to the Highlands County Jail in lieu of $7,500 bond. Christine West's bond was set at $2,500.
