PAXTON — Facing elimination, the Sebring American All-Stars let their bats do the talking on Monday night at the AA Pitching Machine state tournament.
The top of coach Eric Lewis' lineup again kept the opposing defense on its toes, as Gabe Gomez went 3 for 4, Scott Hamilton went 2 for 4 and Sebring stayed alive with a 10-2 thumping of Callaway.
"That's why they're at the top of the lineup," Lewis said. "We're not the biggest team, but we're gutsy, and we'll do what it takes to win."
Sebring jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Gomez and Hamilton scored after bunt singles. Callaway tied the game in the bottom of the third, but Sebring responded with two more runs in the fourth and six runs in the fifth to run away with the victory.
Everett Hurst, Hunter Martinez, Jace Lewis, Brian Lane and Dalton Baker were each 2 for 3, while Logan Gregis and Seth Hamilton added hits in the winning effort.
"It's been wet up here, so every team's resorted to playing small ball," Lewis said. "We're in good shape because our defense is stout.
"I'll take my infield over anyone."
Sebring will take on the loser of the Bushnell/West Seminole American game on Tuesday night. See Thursday's Highlands Today for complete results.
