Published: January 25, 2008

The Schooni's Family Restaurant team rallied in the late innings for a 7-6 victory over the Seminole Tire team in Lake Placid Senior Softball league play on Wednesday at the Lake June Ball fields.

Hits were hard to come by in the low scoring affair, primarily because of excellent fielding plays by both teams and good pitching by Ray Hensley for Schooni's and Paul Smith for Seminole Tire. The only player with three hits on either team was Gary Van who went 3 for 3 with teammates Mike Jurmu, Gary Steeves and Spider Ross each going 2 for 3 in the losing effort for Seminole Tire.

Don Cunningham, Bob Fee, Jim Guild, John Ladensack and Paul Stephenson all were 2 for 3 in the winning effort for Schooni's. Also, the ageless wonder, Al Chipps kept his five-game hitting streak alive with a line drive to left-center field.

The game on the other field was also a tightly fought game going down to the last out with the Michelle Yates Insurance team coming out on top by a score of 16-15 over the Lake Placid Marine team.

The long ball played a major part in the win with Charlie Quinn slamming a home run, a triple and single, while Dorin Quigg also had a home run and Duke Hensley had a triple and two doubles for the Yates team. Rocky Soccarras also had three hits for the winners. Jeff Stanley led the Lake Placid Marine team effort at the plate with three hits followed by Cal Bready, Bob Fox, Roger Lynch, Glenn Minnick, Glenn Wearsch and Darrel Richards with two hits each.

The Yates win puts them in the league lead at 4-1 over the idle second place Central Security team at 3-1. Third place is now held by the Lake Placid Marine team at 3-2 with the Schooni's win breaking them out of a last place tie with Seminole Tire with a record 2-3. Seminole Tire, meanwhile, dropped to 1-4.

League play continues through March.
