Team Koon Wins Heartland Golf

AVON PARK –– Despite blustery conditions, Ken and Michelle Koon managed to shoot a round of 72 to finish first in the Gross Division in Saturday's Heartland Couples Golf League at River Greens Golf Course.

The one-day, 18-hole tournament was the third event in the six-event schedule that runs through April, and it featured a unique format with nine holes of best ball and nine holes a scramble.

Finishing second in the Gross Division was the talented duo of Ken and June Maloney with a 73, while the team of Rodney and Lisa Davis came in third with a round of 75.

Winning the Net Division was Gary and Kim Heintz with a 17-under 55, while the duo of Frank and Handan Schneider placed a close second with a 56.

Jim and Toni Brooks claimed third place with a 59.

Closest-to-the-pin winners were Barb Lockwood on hole No. 3, while Wayne Carlin was closest on hole No. 12.

Ken Maloney had the longest putt on hole No. 7 and Lucy Carlin won the closest-to-the-line contest on hole No. 18.

After each tournament, the players enjoy a special dinner prepared for them and prizes and awards are handed out.

The Heartland Couples Golf League has three more tournaments remaining, with the next event slated for Feb. 16 at River greens, and new couples are invited to come out and join the fun.

Points are awarded for each event with the top three scores counting toward the end of the year championship.

"We want to give couples a chance to play golf together in a relaxed atmosphere and then let them enjoy a nice meal afterward," said River Greens professional Jason Beatty. "We have room for more couples who would like to join the league."
