Whether this letter be in response to those recently expressing consternation of our federal government or to those who may simply question the direction of Highlands County's elected officials, my message remains the same.

The familiar phrase, "Of the people, by the people, for the people" means a great deal to me. In my opinion and quite simply put, "Of the people" signifies that we, the citizens, have given or allowed our government certain powers, which also means that we may restrict them as well. "By the people" then gives us the authority to decide those who will serve in elected positions. "For the people," as I read it, implies that those elected are charged with the responsibility to recognize each person's circumstance and to make proper and just decisions accordingly. This is not an enviable position to be in, for sure.

In my life, I've found there are times when doing the right thing is not necessarily popular. Equally, I've come to understand that what's popular is not always right.

Our elected leaders are often faced with this type of dilemma. We (ideally) choose our leaders based on the best information available to us. These days it's most often garnered from the media or word of mouth. Likewise (ideally) once in office, they will make decisions based upon the best available information. That information, opinion and/or education comes from us, the people.

Our responsibility does not end at the ballot box. It is up to us to not only offer our critique/opinion on an issue, but to also offer reasonable solutions. If you're willing to roll up your sleeves and work with them, you might be pleasantly surprised at the results. Personally, I do not like the idea of an authoritarian government. I do, however, have faith in the current system. Once we've accepted that this "system" is given authority by "the people," it becomes incumbent upon us to remain involved beyond public forums and the voting booth.

Whether it be a local, statewide, or a national concern, I greatly encourage each person to get involved in your government. Let them know your concerns, how an issue affects you, and then offer a workable solution. Not only is there a greater chance your concerns will be addressed, but it will also make their job that much easier.
