SEBRING--According to eyewitnesses, a Chevrolet Trailblazer went "airborne" Monday evening on US 27, flipping onto its top and eventually landing in front of the Hertz Rent A Car, at 1225 US Highway 27 S., in Sebring.

A middle-aged woman was rescued by emergency medical service professionals and members of the Sebring Fire Department, who had to extract her from the back of the SUV.

The front of the SUV was severely damaged and the roof appeared to be caved-in. There were several pieces of debris scattered throughout the road and the grass.

Several Sebring Police Department Officers were investigating the scene of the accident and taking witness statements immediately following the crash.

Eyewitnesses said that the SUV was heading northbound on US 27, when it went over the median and headed into the southbound lane, where it flipped over, onto its top.

The woman in the SUV was placed on a stretcher and taken away by an ambulance to Florida Hospital Heartland Division. An officer with the police department said that to his knowledge, the driver was in fair condition as of 8:30 p.m.

The officer also said that the SUV clipped another vehicle as it crossed the median, but that it did not do any substantial damage to the other vehicle.

The driver of the other vehicle told Highlands Today that she was heading southbound on US 27, and that the Trailblazer was heading directly towards her in the air. The witness said that she had to swerve her vehicle into Golfview Plaza parking lot, just north of where the Trailblazer landed, in order to avoid seriously hitting the vehicle.

The woman was a lone occupant in the SUV.
