In a lopsided affair, the Michelle Yates Insurance team rolled to a 31-3 victory over the Central Security team in Lake Placid Senior Softball league play on Jan. 14.
All of the Yates team players had a least two hits each, with Duke Hensley leading the way with four doubles and a triple, followed by Jim Hensley with two doubles and three singles. Fred Moore also contributed four hits, while Charlie Quinn, Manager Doran Quigg and Harlan Newby added three hits each in the winning effort.
The anemic Central Security offense was led by Dana Hurlbut with three hits and Ed Engler, Max Hehn, and Hugh Grimaldi with two hits each.
Play on the other field was a see-saw affair with the lead changing frequently. In the end, the Schooni's Family Restaurant team prevailed over the Lake Placid Marine team by a score of 20-18.
The Schooni team delivered the long ball with Paul Brand hitting one out of the park along with three other hits.
Manager Jim Guild knocked one to the fence for an inside-the-park home run and Bob Sheets delivered a triple down the right-field line.
Bob Fee, Paul, Stephenson, Howard Carney, and Bob Hensley got three hits each and Al Chipps kept his hitting streak going with two hits.
The Lake Placid Marine Team attack was led by Glenn Minnick with a triple among his four hits, followed by Bob Fox with four hits, including a couple of doubles and Cal Bready, Roger Lynch, and Howard Southwick with three hits each.
The Michelle Yates Insurance team now leads the league with a record of 2 -1, followed by the Seminole Tire, Central Security and Schooni's teams with records of 1-1 with the Lake Placid Marine team in the cellar with a record of 1-2.
A couple of new players joined the league and a few more are needed. Men age 50 and older who are interested in joining in on the fun and fellowship should come to the Lake June ball fields at 9 a.m. on Monday's and Wednesday's.
Central Security Edges Seminole Tire
After an quiet performance in their last game, the Central Security bats came alive against Seminole Tire in a 19-14 victory in Lake Placid Senior Softball league play on Jan. 16.
The Central Security attack was led by Dana Hurlbut and Ed Engler with four hits each and Ray Heisenberg with three hits.
The Seminole Tire team, however, did not go down easily.
Harley Smith and George LaVoie had four hits each and were supported by Paul Smith and Ron Hein who were 3 for 4 at the plate.
Play on the other field also saw a closely contested game going down to the bottom of the last inning.
The Michelle Yates Insurance Team came up big in the seventh inning breaking a 12-12 tie by producing five runs.
The Schooni's home team could only produce one run in the bottom of the seventh as Bruce Maurer made a shoe string catch on a fading line drive by Jim Guild that would likely have produced three more runs had the catch not been made.
The Schooni's team shut out the Yates team in the top of the 8th but could produce no runs in the bottom of the inning because of excellent fielding plays by Bruce Maurer and Duke Hensley with his "young" (relatively speaking) "wheels."
The 17-13 win by the Yates team was paced by four hits by Jim Hensley, three by Duke Hensley, including a double and triple, and three by Fred Moore with two doubles.
Manager Jim Guild led the Schooni's offense with three hits including two triples, Don Cunningham also had three hits, including a double and Paul Brand, Paul Stephenson, Howard Carney and Ray Hensley added two hits each in the losing effort.
The Michelle Yates Insurance team continues to lead the league with a record of 3-1 followed by the Central Security team at 2-1 with Lake Placid Marine, Schooni's Family Restaurant and Seminole Tire teams tied for last with records of 1-2. All games are played at the Lake June ball fields where league play will continue through the end of March.
