Sheriff's Office Warns New 'IRS Refund Scam' Has Surfaced

SEBRING — An IRS e-mail scam has surfaced and Paul Hinman with the Highlands County Sheriff's Office Crime Prevention Unit is warning people not to be taken in by this new twist.

"I received two e-mails on different dates from the Internal Revenue Service – supposedly – informing me I had a tax refund coming."

The e-mail came complete with the IRS logo and claimed to be from the United States Department of Treasury.

The first stated, "After the last annual calculations of your fiscal activity we have determined you are eligible to receive a tax refund for $109.23

"A refund can be delayed for a variety of reasons. For example, submitting invalid records or applying after the deadline. To access the form for your tax refund, please click here..."

The e-mail concludes politely, "Regards, Internal Revenue Service."
The second e-mail was identical, with a refund amount of $360.90.

"The refund request asks for personal information they need," Hinman said. "Don't respond to these.

The IRS can be reached at a toll free number. If you have a refund coming, they will send it to you with a letter. They won't send a form requesting information."
