Published: January 13, 2008

WAUCHULA — Sam Robinson poured in 38 points — including 17 in the third quarter alone — and Joe Young added 18 more on Friday night as the Sebring boys basketball team rallied from a five-point halftime deficit to knock off Hardee 74-67 in Class 4A-District 10 action.

The Blue Streaks outscored the Wildcats 29-15 in the third quarter and had 20 steals, returning the favor against a Hardee squad that beat Sebring at home earlier this season.

"We put a lot of pressure on them and played very good defense," said Sebring coach Princeton Harris. "It caused them some problems."

Robinson, who picked up two fouls in the first quarter and sat much of the second, scored 10 straight points when he re-entered the game to pace the Streaks. Javier Medina, T.J. Williams, Chris Grubb and Natanael Orozco each added four points, while WIlliams' defense held Hardee's Mark St. Fort to 12 points.

"They did a heck of a job," Harris said. "The whole team played very well."

Sebring took on arch-rival Avon Park at SHS on Friday night. For complete coverage, see Monday's Highlands Today.

BOYS BASKETBALL: Booker 53, Avon Park 27

SARASOTA — One day after playing inspired in a loss to DeSoto, the Avon Park boys basketball team stumbled on the road, falling to Booker 53-27.

Virgil Cooper paced the Red Devils with 10 points, while Tim Dennis added nine.

"We played DeSoto so tough," said Avon Park coach Luther Clemons. "It was like we did the exact opposite."

The Red Devils traveled to arch-rival Sebring on Friday night. For complete coverage, see Monday's Highlands Today.

GIRLS BASKETBALL: McKeel 50, Lake Placid 28

LAKELAND — Kaneisha Hamilton had 16 points and Shardeisia Sholtz added nine more, but it wasn't enough Friday night as McKeel Academy rolled past the Lake Placid girls basketball team, 50-28.
"We played fairly decent in the first half," said LP coach Shonda LeGree. "We were only down eight, but then we lost it from there."

The Green Dragons take on Okeechobee on Monday at home. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.

"We need to try to settle down and run the offense we have," Legree said. "We get too much in a hurry sometimes with up and down tempo, we just need to be patient."

BOYS SOCCER: Braden River 2, Sebring 1

BRADENTON — Nicholas Peters scored a goal in the first 10 minutes, but the Braden River boys soccer team scored two unanswered to take a 2-1 victory over the Blue Streaks in both teams' final regular-season district game of the season.

"We fell asleep in the middle of the match," said Sebring coach Paul Brown. "We had about three or four chances to equalize, but we couldn't capitalize."

The Streaks have two non-district matches — Monday at 6 p.m. vs. Clewiston and Friday at 7:30 p.m. vs. LaBelle — before the Class 4A-District 10 tournament.

BOYS SOCCER: McKeel 8, Avon Park 1

LAKELAND — Vilsoire Satine scored Avon Park's first in-action goal of the season — their second overall — but McKeel Academy took over from there in an 8-1 victory over the Red Devils.

"We kicked it toward the goalie, and he didn't catch it, so Vilsoire kicked in the rebound," said Avon Park coach Jocelyn Simplice, who noted his team wasn't at full-strength. "We had some boys still hurt from (Thursday's) game."

The Red Devils are next in action on Tuesday at Frostproof. Kick-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
