SEBRING — After being out of the golf business for two years, Debby McNall is back where she belongs — in a pro shop.
McNall, who worked at Golf Hammock Country Club for five years as an assistant pro and as director of golf, and for two years as head pro at Highlands Ridge, has been named as assistant pro at Sebring Golf Club.
"I'm excited about being back in the golf business," McNall said. "When I thought about the last 15 years and what I enjoyed doing the most, it was golf.
"I'm excited about being at Sebring Golf Club and working with the members and helping them with anything they need."
Kim Darrow, who took over as head pro at Sebring Golf Club with the recent departure of Tom McClurg to Wisconsin, said naming McNall as her assistant was an easy choice.
"We're so glad to have Debby join our staff because she has experience in the golf business and has a very outgoing personality," Darrow said. "She is always so upbeat and positive and it's important to me to work with someone that has a positive outlook."
McNall, who left Highlands Ridge in 2005, was involved in a serious car accident and is still recovering from her injuries.
"I had a couple of ruptured disks in my neck that required surgery, and I'm still rehabbing from that," McNall said. "I've got some pins and screws holding my neck together, but I'm feeling better and looking forward to getting back on the course. I enjoy golf so much and being out of the business for two years gave me a break from the daily grind, but it also gave me a chance to see what I really wanted to do.
"I decided golf was what I enjoyed the most and this is where I wanted to be."
Darrow and McNall form quite a talented duo, but they are not the first female golf staff in Highlands County.
"I worked with Nell Frewin-Hays at Golf Hammock and Melissa Doorlag at Highlands Ridge," McNall said. "I'm thrilled to be working with Kim and I think I can fill in some of the gaps to help her keep things running smoothly."
Darrow and McNall have several goals that are priorities for this year.
"We want to be involved in junior golf and help promote the game to the next generation," McNall said. "I've always been a big advocate of junior golf programs at every club I've been at, and we look forward to playing a major role in helping to develop the golf games of the youngsters in the community."
With more than 300 members, the pro shop at Sebring Golf Club is a busy place this time of year.
"We want to make sure the members are happy and we are planning several adult clinics, and of course, we will be offering lessons," Darrow said. "We also want to have some co-ed leagues and we will be hosting numerous tournaments."
Being efficient and working with Darrow to satisfy the members is something McNall looks forward to accomplishing.
"Kim and I think a lot alike and I can't think of a better situation to be in," McNall said. "I'm energized and rested up and look forward to making good things happen at Sebring Golf Club."
