WINTER HAVEN — Three Red Devils scored in double figures on Thursday night as the Avon Park girls basketball team started slow but finished strong during a 52-32 victory over Class 2A All Saints Academy.

It was the Red Devils' first action since Dec. 21, though AP coach Paulette Daley said the team showed little signs of holiday rust.

"We tend to start slow anyway," she said. "But once we got our rhythm back, we picked up the pace and played at our level."

Beonca Godfrey led all scorers with 15 points, while Daija Barrett added 12 points and Johnequa Perry chipped in 10 points in a game Avon Park led throughout. Daley said she hoped to get her team into a holiday tournament over winter break, but was unable to work out the scheduling. She said she hopes to get her team some action over next year's vacation.

"This was one we scheduled at the beginning of the year," Daley said. "It would've been nice to get some more game time in during the holidays, but we practiced a few times and tried to keep them tuned up."

The Red Devils head to Lake Placid on Monday to battle the cross-county rival Green Dragons. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.

"I'm hoping to see a little more energy," Daley said. "I can understand since we haven't been playing, but we need to pick up that tempo, and get going early instead of starting in the second quarter."
