For the most part, three kinds of people live in Highlands County: The recent newcomers, who laughed off Wednesday's cold weather, saying it "felt good." The Florida natives who bundled up and acted as if we were on the North Pole. And then there are many of us who have been here just enough years that we want to act like the cold was nothing, but were shivering to the bone, wondering at what point our blood finally thinned.
Wednesday's and Thursday's cold snap reminds folks here that cold weather can hit us, although briefly. It also reminds us why we like living here so much this time of year.
Most Florida transplants desperately miss fall weather and colors. After a long, sticky Florida summer, the thought of cool breezes and chilly nights sounds appealing. By this time of year, though, many of us chuckle when we see sub-zero temperatures and snow storms elsewhere while we're enjoying warm days.
Thursday morning's frosty conditions gave us – for a moment – some semblance of winter weather. But a cold snap isn't too hard to take when you know in a day or two it's going to be 80 degrees again. Ahh, winter in Florida!
