SEBRING –– Let the games begin.
The 2008 Heartland Senior Games, sanctioned by the Florida Sports Foundation, are scheduled for March 4-28 in venues throughout Avon Park and Sebring.
Open to amateur athletes age 50 and older, the local qualifiers will advance to the Florida Senior Games State Championships later this year.
Age categories for participants are 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80-84, 85-89, 90 and above.
Participants will be able to compete in table tennis, basketball, billiards, pickleball, 5k walk/run, 5k and 10k cycling, track and field, tennis singles and doubles and mixed doubles, bocce, bowling singles, doubles and mixed doubles, horseshoes, golf and shuffleboard.
Registration fee is $6 per person, which allows athletes to compete in any number of events.
Additional fees for golf are $37, bowling is $8 and billiards is $2.

Senior athletes from the Heartland have fared well at the state championships which will be held in Lee County Dec. 1-9.
Closing ceremonies for the Heartland Senior games will be at the Caddy Shack restaurant at the Sebring Golf Club on March 28 at 10 a.m.
