Ya Gotta Have Nerve

Published: February 23, 2008

A few weeks back I got a chance to meet Debra Snyder the new general manager of Woody's BBQ in Sebring. She is one progressive lady. For example, it takes a lot of nerve to close your business to paying customers for an evening in order to host a monthly Chamber of Commerce Mixer.

"It was a matter of space," Debra told me. She wanted to host a chamber thing and just didn't have the space to accommodate both paying customers and a mixer; so she had her daughter Sarah offer apologies to the hungry masses while she served the members some mighty tasty chicken and pulled pork and fixin's. One of which was a trial run of french fries made of sweet potatoes. The tasty tidbits certainly got my vote of approval, which I hope led to her introducing them as a 'side' shortly after we chatted.

The lady manager, who took over her position last August, was born in Key West when her father was stationed there while serving in the Navy. She currently lives in Lorida and has been with the Woody's chain for the past three years.

The Sebring restaurant itself is celebrating its 10th anniversary next month. In recognition of the community's continued support, Debra and owner Bill Caldwell are going to hold a raffle on March 15 and 16 where yet unspecified items will be given as prizes. All the proceeds from the raffle as well as 10 percent of the restaurant's revenue for that weekend will be shared with the Sebring Boys and Girls Club and the Sebring High School Project Graduation, which helps seniors with the expenses associated with the ceremony.

May they have a smokin' successful time of it.

Dancing With The Group

I can't dance, don't ask me. I've got to have either two left feet or some sort of inner ear malfunction. Still I like to watch shows like Dancing With The Stars, or movies that show some klutz develop into an award-winning dancer.

We were watching the movie "Blond Ambition" the other night. It's kind of a "happiness is a warm blanket" kind of story. In it the main character played by Jessica Simpson teaches the object of her affection, Luke Wilson, how to line-dance.

That got me thinking. If only two people are line-dancing isn't it more like dash-dancing? That then opens up a whole line (pun intended) of dance routines: One person would be doing dot-dancing and a group of people unable to stay on line might be curve-dancing. As a group became more adept at these forms they could branch off into the circle, the triangle and the hexagonal. The professionals on the other hand could develop their own complex "not to try at home" styles like the pyramid and the tetrahedron.

This type of dancing could generate not only a whole new craze for those talent-searching TV shows but it could also renew an interest in geometry and possibly in math in general.

What Goes Around…

Think about this: If the flood of illegals from Mexico continues soon there will be there will be no one left down there to manufacture items for shipment back to America under favorable trade agreements established by the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). On the other hand there won't be anyone down there to buy the agriculture we ship south of the border by the same agreement.

Overheard

Overheard at the checkout counter: I agree that cellphone usage in public places is getting out of hand and I'll tell you why as soon as I take this call.
