SEBRING — A Sebring woman was arrested Wednesday and charged with 41 fraud and larceny counts for allegedly stealing her neighbors' mail and using their credit cards and checks.

Charlene Gail Walterman, 27, of 1821 E. Recreation Drive, reportedly stole neighborhood mail in the 600 block area of Sparta Road last year.

According to arrest reports provided by the Highlands County Sheriff's Office, Walterman allegedly stole three credit cards from a female victim in her neighborhood, using them to rack up more than $9,500 worth of charges at Sebring stores, including the Home Depot, Publix, Circle K, McDonalds, Wal-Mart, Sweetbay, Big Lots, Bealls and Kentucky Fried Chicken.

Walterman allegedly used one credit card over a six-day time period in May, charging more than $2,000 to the card.

Another card was allegedly used at the Home Depot, charging more than $2,200 over three days in July. Another was also allegedly used to charge more than $5,400 at various locations from July 2 through July 21.

The cards were also used in Polk, Orange and Lee counties.

Walterman was also charged in connection to stealing checks from a male neighbor and depositing them in her savings account at an area bank. She allegedly deposited two checks, at a combined total of more than $600, at the bank in April and May.

Walterman was also charged in connection to an incident that occurred in August 2007, where she and another woman allegedly purchased more than $600 worth of goods from the Lowe's Home Improvement store in Sebring using a fraudulently obtained credit card.

You know what kills me? Stores are making it easier and easier for people to steal from us. They do not even check for picture ID! What if these store were to be held responsible? Would that stop this?

As I know from experience, the credit card companies bill back these businesses, so in essence, the store becomes the victim after the credit card company gets a hold of them. That's why these credit card companies don't care who they get or give a card to.

Why don't all credit cards have the owner's picture on it?

Stores that do not check id's are the blame here. Wal-mart you can spend hundreds of dollars and they never check ID's. If they would just take a minute to check the ID this would stop.
