Terriers Chew Up Green Dragons
MOORE HAVEN — Maribel Garza scored on a fielder's choice to give the visiting Green Dragons a two-run advantage, but the Moore Haven Terriers responded with a flurry of runs over the next four innings to pummel Lake Placid 12-2 in the 10-run mercy-rule, five-inning affair.
n with just two runs," LP head coach Marilyn Jones said. "They played great for the first couple of innings, but then we just fell apart."
Garza bunted her way to first, stole second and then scored on a fielder's choice to give the Green Dragons that two-run cushion. But Garza couldn't duplicate that success on the mound.
"[Maribel] got flustered on the mound and lost her confidence," Jones said. "She really felt bad about her performance."
Senior Marsha McMimms and Ashley Paplow were a bright spot for Lake Placid on the defensive side, making solid plays and backing their teammates up.
"I saw a lot of potential with this team," Jones said. "We just have to find a way to put it all together."
ALL WASHED OUT: The rest of the Heartland sports slate was rained out on Thursday.
Sebring softball, Sebring boys and girls tennis, Avon Park boys and girls tennis, Lake Placid boys and girls tennis and South Florida Community College softball were postponed due to rain.
Keep an eye on the calendar (page 2B) in the coming weeks for rescheduled games.
