WINTER HAVEN — A string of free passes came back to bite the Panthers yet again.
The Polk Community College baseball team scored four runs off seven walks to defeat South Florida Community College 8-1 at Viking Field on Wednesday.
"We were very undisciplined at the plate," said SFCC head coach Rick Hitt. "We never got it going on offense, and [Polk's] pitching staff did a great job against us."
Austin Gaines scored the Panthers' only run in the first inning off a fielder's choice by Steven Levine and managed just six hits against the Vikings.
"There's not much to say," Hitt said. "We've scored one run in 18 innings and we're in a bit of a rut.
"All I know is that the walks have to go. Historically, we haven't been a team that walks too many batters. I'd rather see the ball in play instead of giving a batter a free pass. But we're looking forward to the upcoming home stand and hope to bounce back."
The Panthers host the Community College of Baltimore County Dundalk Lions in a doubleheader on Friday. The annual BBQ and baseball event is being held on Saturday with food being served from noon-4 p.m.
The first pitch will be at 1 p.m. as the Panthers take on the University of Tampa. Tickets are $6 and will be on sale at the gate.
