HERNANDO –– Steven Levine broke a seventh-inning tie with a three-run homer and Wiggy Vazquez picked up the save as South Florida Community College edged Pasco-Hernando 10-9 on Sunday.
Levine's blast made a winner of Jasper Brown as the Panthers improved to 10-9 overall.
"We got solid production from our offense and played well in a good conference atmosphere," said SFCC coach Rick Hitt. "We battled the whole game, got some big hits and got just enough pitching to get a win."
Brandon Decker contributed to the Panther attack by going 2 for 4 with a double and a home run.
SFCC is back in action today with an away game at Manatee.
SFCC SOFTBALL
AVON PARK –– The South Florida Community College softball team had its work cut out for it with a doubleheader against the top-ranked team in the state on Sunday at Panther Field.
The Panthers looked like world beaters in the first game as sophomore Addie Tallman pitched a complete-game two-hitter and freshman Jessica Cooley singled in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning for a 2-1 win over Santa Fe.
"We played up to our potential in the fist game," said SFCC coach Carlos Falla. "Addie pitched well, we played solid defense and got some timely hits."
The second game was a different story as the Panthers committed five errors which led to six Santa Fe runs in a 13-6 loss.
"Our offense was OK in the second game, but we made some mistakes in the field and it hurt us," said Falla. "We only started two sophomores in the second game and our inexperience showed.
"We're a young team and the girls are going through a learning process, but we have talent and ability, it's just a matter of getting experience."
SFCC is home today with a game against Manatee and the first pitch is set for 5 p.m.
