CLEARWATER – When your starting pitching puts nothing but zeroes on the scoreboard, your chances of winning go up exponentially.
South Florida Community College used strong starting pitching and timely hitting to sweep a doubleheader from Clearwater Christian College by scores of 5-0 and 8-1 on Saturday.
Sophomore Jeff Bloomer tossed a complete-game shutout to get the Panthers off on the right track, while freshman Chaz Abeln allowed one run and struck out seven in six innings of work to earn the win in game two.
Austin Gaines led the offense by going 5 for 7 in the two games with three doubles.
"We played well for the most part," said SFCC coach Rick Hitt. "We're still battling the inconsistency bug, but we've won eight of our last twelve games, so we're getting better.
"We're still missing a couple of our starters, but we hope to have them back sometime soon."
The Panthers improved to 8-8 on the season and have two more weeks to prepare for their conference opener on March 6.
"Some of the guys are still learning what college baseball is all about, but we're working hard to improve." said Hitt.
SFCC had a road game against Pasco-Hernando Community College on Sunday.
