LAKE PLACID — Stuart Galloway knows a thing or two about winning races.

The 47-year old part-time Sebring resident from just outside of Niagara Falls, Canada, is a running coach at the Niagara Olympic Club in St. Catherines, Ontario, where he instructs internationally-renowned middle-distance runners on the art of staying ahead of the pack.

That knowledge was put to good use on Saturday, as Galloway joined about 125 other competitors at the inaugrual Greater Lake Placid Chamber of Commerce Family 5K Run/Walk where he was the overall winner with a time of 17 minutes, 19 seconds.

"It was a little tough, having that first mile uphill — I'm not used to that in a 5K," said Galloway, who noted he expected to run in the 17:30-range.

One runner who didn't know what to expect was overall female winner Amanda Smith, a 21-year old from Miami, who was running in her first competitive 5K. She said the first mile wasn't as tough as the last.

"I thought the hills at the end were worse," Smith said, who'd never run competitively but was accustomed to endurance running through her high-school soccer and lacrosse days. "I turned the corner and thought I was about done, but then I saw I had quite a ways to go."

It was indeed a year of firsts for the event, according to Jack Edgemon, a chamber board member and chairman of the 5K committee. Some unique aspects to the race included awarding medals to kids as young as five, long-sleeved T-shirts and a shotgun start. This year's theme was "Run For Your Heart."

He said the 5K was something the chamber thought up this year because there simply aren't many such events during the winter months.

"People like to come out and test themselves," said Edgemon, whose shotgun was used to begin the race on the circle surrounding DeVane Park. "We're extremely happy with the turnout — for the first one, this is fantastic."

Other winners included Terry Engle, whose 22:19 time won the male master's division, and Rosemary Rodriguez, whose time of 25:10 was tops among female masters.
