Discount Aluminum Runs Two Marathons

SEBRING — The longest game this season for the Sebring senior softball league took place on Tuesday between the Reflections and Discount Aluminum Teams. The merry-go-round slugfest, which went 10 innings was won 25-24 by Reflections.

Gary Vanthournout led Reflections at the plate, going 4 for 6 and getting on base in the 10th inning. Joe Hynzy then slammed a double to drive Gary home for the winning run.

Hynzy finished 5 for 7 with two doubles, while Bill Yeager was 4 for 6 with a home run, Wayne Hill was 5 for 6, and Kyle Saunders, Ron Lewis, Cal Bready, Ed Lindberg each went 4 for 6.

For Discount Aluminum, James Gilbert was 5 for 5 with two homers, Leslie Smith was 4 for 5 with a home run and Rudy Pibble and Ken Crandall were each 4 for 5.

In other action, Highlands Independent Bank of Avon Park defeated the Rebels, 18-4. The Bank's heaviest hitters were Pierre Boissonneault, who went 4 for 5, Jack Steinhart, who went 4 for 4 and Bob Brooks, who finished 3 for 5.

Jack Grosso, Diz Jones, Don Matthews, Jerry Mattis and Stan Turl were each had two hits for the Rebels.

Royal Palm fairly buried Highlands Independent Bank Sebring with a 19-3 victory. The Bank's best offense was led by Larry Lane, who went 3 for 3 with a triple and a home run. Royal Palm players helping the score were Doug Hammond, who went 4 for 5 with a homer, and Charlie Quinn who was 4 for 4 with a triple and Bob MacCarrick, who finished 3 for 3 with two doubles. Doran Quigg and Bobby Fox each had two hits, and Fox had five RBIs.

Silent Salesman gained sole possession of third place in the league by out-scoring the Klingons 12-4. Some exceptional fielding plays by both teams kept the score close until the fifth inning, when the momentum changed and the Salesman opened up a 7-1 lead.

The game was another good team effort by the Silent Salesman batters: Eleven had at least one hit. Big guns were Mike Jurmu, who slugged 4 for 4 with the only home run, Jerry Johnston, who went 3 for 4 and Victor Rodriquez, who was 3 for 4 with a booming triple.

The Klingons' scoring was done by Dick Schiltz, who was 2 for 3 with a double, Bob Silvia, who was 3 for 3 with a double and two RBIs, and Don Day and Howard Southwick, who each had two hits and an RBI.

In Thursday's game, Discount Aluminum was involved in another 10-inning game, this time against the Rebels. This time, however, Discount came out on top with a 17-16 winning score.

Leslie Smith was 3 for 4 with a triple, Jim Hensley was 5 for 5, Bobby Fee was 4 for 4 with three RBI and Ken Crandall was 4 for 4 with two RBI.

The Rebels' big hitters were Tony Caristo and Stan Turl, who each went 4 for 5 with a double. Diz Jones also went 3 for 5 with a double and triple.

Reflections and Highlands Independent Bank of Sebring were competitive through the fourth inning, then the Bank lost their footing and were defeated 26-14. Larry Lane hit 3 for 4 with a home run for Highlands Independent.

Wayne Hill hit for the cycle for Reflections, while Kyle Saunders was 4 for 5 including a home run and Joe Hynzy had 4 for 5 with a double.

Silent Salesman's winning streak came to an end as a determined Highlands Independent Bank of Avon Park team prevailed with a 13-11 victory.

The game was close through the sixth, when the Bank tallied four runs. Salesman's eighth-inning rally fell short, with the trying runs left on base. Don Cunningham batted 2 for 3 with a homer and Mike Jurmu went 3 for 4 including a double and a triple, while Jerry Johnston was 2 for 4 with a triple. Victor Rodriquez and Syd Collins, meanwhile, each hit a double.

The Bank's real star was Bob Brooks, who belted a grand slam in the seventh. Pierre Boissonneault reached base twice and came up with two home runs and Eddie Carrol was the winning pitcher. Charley Williams made some extra good plays as shortstop and five players scored two runs each.

Royal Palms, meanwhile, overtook the Klingons by a score of 17-6. Bob Fox was all business: he finished 3 for 4 with a single, triple and home run and five RBI. Doug Hammond was 3 for 4 with a triple and Charlie Quinn doubled. Tommy Gaiownik was credited with four RBI and Bob Weiss had three RBI. Winning pitcher was Pete Mathews.
