LAKE PLACID — At approximately 12:15 p.m. Thursday, Highlands County Emergency Management officials and firefighters responded to a structure fire at 942 Peachtree Drive, in Lake Placid's Leisure Lakes subdivision.
Ben Henley, of the Highlands County EOC, said that as of Thursday at press time, the fire had been contained. There were no injuries according to Henley.
Sixteen homes, housing 40 residents, located downwind of the fire, had to be evacuated, Henley added. Evacuees were allowed to return to their homes at approximately 3 p.m.
Henley said that the evacuation was a precaution because the maintenance shop housed several chemicals, fertilizers and pesticides, which burned and could have possibly seeped into the air.
