Man Charged In Sun 'N Lake Car Burglaries

SEBRING — Photographs from an automated teller machine were used to identify a Sebring man and connect him to 10 car burglaries in the Sun 'n Lake of Sebring subdivision in September.

Thomas Bernard Nelson, 18, of 5109 Sturgeon Ave., Sebring, was booked Thursday on charges of two counts of credit card thefts, five counts of grand theft $300 or more but less than $5,000, fraudulent use of a credit card more than two times in six months, 10 counts of burglary of a structure or conveyance while unarmed and three counts of petty theft.

Sheriff's investigators prepared seven separate arrest reports listing the instances of car-fishing-type vehicle burglaries, they say, were committed between Sept. 19 and Sept. 20.

On Sept. 26 detectives report they spoke with Nelson, who voluntarily cooperated and showed investigators the location of burglaries he admitted taking part in.

These included:

u A 1997 Ford Ranger pickup truck in the 3900 block of Urbino Street, which had its console ransacked, including a small amount of cash.

u A 1999 Hyundai passenger car in the 4100 block of Navarre Avenue, from which two debit cards, credit cards, and two gold rings valued at $300 were taken, plus $20 cash.

u A 2006 Dodge Durango and a 1979 Chevrolet truck in the 4200 block of Tangier Street, from which $12 sunglasses and a $200 stereo were taken.

u A 2004 Ford Ranger, a 2002 Pontiac Grand Am, and a Pontiac Vibe, in the 3900 block of Urbino Street, from which 30 CDs valued at $475, 35 CDs valued at $545, were reported taken.

u A 1990 Toyota which was ransacked but nothing was missing in the 3900 block of Urbino Street.

u A 2000 Kia Rio, which was ransacked but nothing was taken, in the 4500 block of Navarre Avenue.

u A 1995 Ford Taurus and a 1996 Oldsmobile in the 4100 block of Capri Street, from which compact discs and an Orlando Magic hat, a social security card and miscellaneous items valued at $190 were taken.

Nelson was turned over to the Department of Juvenile Justice in Bartow, as he was still 17 years old at the time the burglaries occurred, in which he is a suspect.
