February is traditionally known as the month to celebrate love and romance on Valentine's Day and recognize some of the country's great presidents on Presidents' Day.
In Florida fairs, festivals and other special events are annual rites during this month.
The Highlands County Fair opened Friday and will continue through the 16th. There will be lots of entertainment, rides and – of course – fair food.
In addition there are two beauty pageants for young women, a baking contest, a Girl Scout cookie eating contest and the popular livestock show.
Weather has been an issue, as it sometimes is during the winter, during the county fair. But the forecast looks good this week and although we need the rain, it would be nice to have dry conditions.
The Florida State Fair is under way in Tampa. It will run through the 18th of this month and includes roller derby, fireworks and professional wrestling.
The Greek Festival is set for this coming weekend at St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church in Winter Haven.
Then there is the Strawberry Festival in Plant City. It begins at the end of this month on the 28th and runs through March 9.
At this time of year there is never a lack of things to do both locally and in places not too far away. We hope residents and visitors take advantage of them and have a good time doing so.
