Lake Placid Surges To Win
ARCADIA — Zack Heckman came off the bench down one with the bases loaded and hit a pinch-hit double down the right field line in the bottom of the seventh to lift the Lake Placid baseball team to an 8-7 victory over Evangelical Christian during the DeSoto preseason tourney on Thursday.
Green Dragon head coach Dan Coomes was elated when asked about how his team battled back.
"This is such a boost of confidence for us," the LP skipper said. "It was a great learning experience, but we still have a lot of work to do.
"But it was nice to get this win."
Carlos Sosa and David Samperi each had three hits, while Sosa was a home run shy of hitting for the cycle.
With a tough upcoming schedule that will see LP play Sebring and Booker, Coomes knows his team hasn't seen anything yet.
"This team has a lot of young players," Coomes said. "We're going to be playing bigger schools and we need to work on fundamentals and doing the little things right. But I saw a lot of progress from this team tonight."
The Green Dragons face Lake Region on Feb. 12 in the opening round of the Bill Jarrett Early Bird tourney in Avon Park.

SOFTBALL: Avon Park 10, DeSoto 0
ARCADIA — Avon Park continued its offensive explosion, as Julie Lamb hit her second home run of the season and the Red Devils blanked DeSoto 10-0 on Thursday.
Lamb's two-run homer only added to Avon Park's offensive numbers: The Red Devils have scored a staggering 57 runs in the first four games of the season.
"We're just hitting the ball well," said AP head coach Mike Cobb. "There's isn't any other justification for it.
"We played great defense tonight and Ashton [Shirey] pitched a great game for us."
Shirey hurled a complete game one-hitter against DeSoto and blasted a bases-clearing three-run triple, while Heather Barnes and Missy Lander both chipped in a pair of hits for the undefeated Red Devils.
Avon Park traveled to George Jenkins on Friday night. For results, see Sunday's Highlands Today.
