SEBRING — Veterans Beach will remain closed until at least the end of February after failing a water quality test two months in a row, making it unsafe for swimming.
Health Department officials determined Veterans Beach is unsafe for swimming because of high levels of fecal coliform.
Assistant City Administrator Scott Noethlich said the problem is most likely caused by bird droppings. Noethlich said he is working with county officials to do independent testing to try to identify the problem.
"We want to make sure the problem is not a result of something else that we need to correct," Noethlich said.
The water will be tested again at the end of the month.
The other Sebring public beaches, City Pier, Hidden Beach and Crescent Beach all passed the water test.
