BABSON PARK — Jeff Bloomer has returned to his dominant pre-injury form, as he scattered six hits over six innings and struck out four to lead the South Florida Community College baseball team to a 10-4 victory over Webber International University on Tuesday.
"Our starting pitching again got us off to a good start and we were able to maintain it," said SFCC head coach Rick Hitt. "Our hitters are getting a little bit better, when they buy in, they have success.
Bloomer spent most of last season sidelined with an injured shoulder and didn't see action during the fall exhibition season before pitching for the first time on Jan. 25 — his first action in nearly a year.
Sophomore Brien Coppola went 2 for 4 and drove in three runs, while utility player Mike Janotmaso drove in three runs to improve the Panthers record to 4-4 on the season. After dropping its first four games, SFCC has won four straight.
"On defense, we're still making two or three mistakes a game, which is really frustrating considering the time we spend on defense daily," Hitt said. "But it's still early and we have to try to continue to get better each time out."
The Panthers faced Hillsborough Community College at Panther Field on Wednesday. For complete coverage, see Friday's Highlands Today.
