AVON PARK – A water main burst near the Avon Park Executive Airport early this morning, causing outages throughout most of the city's water system.
City officials said at 9 a.m. today that the 12-inch pipe had been repaired and the city's water should be restored now.
Fred Renfro, a foreman with the city's public works department, said the PVC pipe that burst near the airport was part of a loop that served most of the city's system.
No boil notices will be issued, Renfro added, saying the rupture did not get to that point where contaminants could have entered the supply.
The affected water system stretches north from the area near the site of the since-demolished Walker Memorial Hospital, south towards the Wild Turkey Tavern, west to Avon Park Lakes and east to Lake Angelo. The Sebring Ridge system, which covers the southern part of the area around Memorial Drive leading into Sebring, was not affected by the outage.
