Sebring Wallops Hardee
WAUCHULA — Sami Lower went 2 for 4 and drove in four runs, while Melissa Luke and Heather McIntyre drove in a pair of runs as the Sebring softball team beat up on the Hardee Wildcats 17-1 in the Class 4A-District 10 season opener on Tuesday.
"We played great defense and our bats were on target tonight," said SHS head coach Lee Tolar. "These girls are playing up to par very early in the season and will only get better."
Senior Niki Helms hurled three complete innings and gave up only two hits, as the Blue Streak pitchers allowed just four hits on the night.
Sebring is back on the field tonight against cross-county rival Lake Placid at Green Dragon field. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
BASEBALL: Lemon Bay, 8, Lake Placid 3
ARCADIA — Lemon Bay scored four runs in the third inning, and despite two hits from Carlos Sosa, the Manta Rays pulled away for an 8-3 victory in the Green Dragons' first game of the season at DeSoto High School.
"We had some first-game jitters," said LP coach Dan Coomes. "We made some mistakes and they played well — they have a lot of kids who played fall ball, and they did things right."
Coomes said his pitchers — Adam Delgado, Mario Gonzales and Perry Mason — threw solidly for their first action of the spring.
"We struggled a little bit in the field," Coomes said, "and that prolonged some innings."
The Dragons continue play at 4:30 p.m. today when they take on Evangelical Christian. LP will head to Avon Park next week for the Bill Jarrett tournament.
