SEBRING –– The time for tweaking their lineup and making adjustments is over for the boys basketball coaches in the Heartland.
It's tournament time.
The second round of the boys Class 4A-District 10 tournament is tonight in Palmetto, and Avon Park and Sebring are both in action.
Avon Park, which is the No. 5 seed, faces fourth-seed Hardee at 6 tonight.
The Red Devils, who lost to Okeechobee 57-55 on Saturday, have had an up and down season and a win tonight against a talented Wildcat squad would send them into Friday night's semifinals.
"Playing Okeechobee was a good tune-up for the district tournament," said first-year Avon Park coach Luther Clemons. "We were down by 10 points with under four minutes to play and came back and made it a game.
"We have gone through a lot this season, but this is the time that matters most and a win would do a lot for our confidence."
Sebring, which is the No. 3 seed, takes on tournament host Palmetto, which is the No. 6 seed, at 7:30 in tonight's second game.
The Blue Streaks are playing their best basketball of the season after blasting Lake Placid 75-29 on Thursday night and routing LaBelle 73-42 on Friday night.
"We've been working hard and the kids are ready to go," said Sebring coach Princeton Harris. "But they're the ones who have to execute. I can't get out on the court and play for them.
"We have the talent and ability to win the district title, but we have to believe in ourselves, stay focused and play hard every minute."
If Avon Park wins tonight, it will face No. 1 seed DeSoto in one of Friday's semifinals.
If Sebring wins tonight, it will play the winner of Monday night's first round game between No. 2 seed Sarasota Booker and No. 7 seed Braden River at 6 p.m. on Friday.
Results from that game were not available at press time.
