Okeechobee 57, Avon Park 55
OKEECHOBEE – Despite a valiant fourth-quarter comeback, the Avon Park boys basketball team fell to Okeechobee 57-55 on Saturday night in the Brahman gym.
Early foul trouble forced the Red Devils to sit freshman Alonzo Robertson, who finished with 11 points, and Tim Dennis, who did a good job on the boards.
Okeechobee took advantage by taking a 35-18 halftime lead.
Freshman Avierre Conner finished with 12 points and helped the Red Devils mount their second-half comeback.
Virgil Cooper provided energy along with 11 points and Xavier Caldwell crashed the boards and scored six points. Avon Park was down by 10 points with three minutes remaining, but refused to quit and threw a scare into the Brahmans.
The Red Devils take on Hardee in first round of the Class 4A-District 10 tournament in Palmetto on Tuesday.
"This was a good tune-up for us before the district tournament," said Avon Park first-year coach Luther Clemons. "We just need to execute and play as a team and we'll be fine."
