As a bar manager, I would like to personally thank all the members of American Legion Post 69, who so graciously donated to the fundraiser for the domestic violence shelter.
A few days before Christmas, I was asked to find a phone number for a shelter here in town. In searching for that number, I happened to speak with Debbie from the domestic violence shelter. She had told me that they would have at least nine children staying with them at Christmas, and that donations were desperately needed.
I and a few elves at the Post decided to sell stockings to adorn the walls and use the money to help the shelter. In a very short time we were able to raise more than $500 to buy clothing, diapers, blankets, towels, gas cards, coloring books and crayons and other essential items for those in need.
I heard from some members that there had been times when they could have used these services but none were around. They were so happy to be able to now help someone else. I even had a couple who challenged each other on a donation. My mom and I also had a great bonding experience shopping for the shelter. It was truly a pleasure shopping for someone we didn't know, and mom remarked that it was the "best Christmas she could remember in some time."
Thanks to Beall's Outlet for the discount they gave us and to everyone who made this possible. Post 69 Auxiliary has a Children and Youth Program which is run by Darlene Watkin. If anyone would like to help with a project of this kind, please contact Darlene at 314-9107 or the American Legion Post 69 at 453-4553.
