After reading Bud Morgan's recent editorial titled, "Doesn't anyone apologize anymore?" I am compelled to point out that the precondition for an apology is the recognition that one had done something inappropriate, a breach of manners, a mistake, a faux pas.
However, the current style of "in your face" deception currently in vogue does not admit error, as amply demonstrated by our soon to be replaced president and vice president.
When asked what he considered to be his greatest mistake, President Bush was hard pressed to find any fault or flaw in his disastrous administration. When the absence of WMDs in Iraq was called to his attention, his response was "So what?" Apologize?
Now completing his vaunted "Victory Lap," visiting Iraq, Afghanistan and other venues of his recent disasters, it should be clear that no one has anything to apologize for.
Surely with role models such as the King of Chutzpah as the trend setter – apologies are a thing of the past. Denial and rewriting history is in vogue, and in such circumstances, the admission of fault, the acceptance of responsibility and the honest expression of regret have no place in contemporary dialogue.
